THE STORY
This led to the creation of the La Brune range an exclusive Elgin cool climate range of wine that is built upon many small complexities to produce something truly intricate.

"The greatest skill of a winemaker is to add sense of place to wine, La Brune Chardonnay and Pinot Noir carries the message of the land with the roots of my vines and myself pushed deep into our soils connected as only a winemaker can be with his land"

- Nico Grobler – Owner and vigneron.

La Brune
Chardonnay
2018

Our maiden release. Pure, clean and linear, tight with a mineral core coated with some beautiful texture and long finish.
The La Brune dream (French for brunette) was born when winemaker Nico Grobler fell in love with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir through a close friend and Vigneron Bruno Lorenzon of Domaine Lorenzon in Mercurey (Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy).

Over the past decade visits to Burgundy educated Nico about finesse, elegance, perfume, restraint, purity, freshness, and length.

THE FAMILY
Married to Christelle they make up a dynamic team. Nico have been growing vineyard and making wine for 15 years and Christelle is an economist by trade.

"It all started with one ton of Pinot Noir in 2011. We really didn't know where we were going with this…it was just an absolute passion that we both had for Pinot Noir and we just wanted to produce our own in a style we believe in" says Christelle.

They have two young daughters Nicola and Lisa who are very passionate about La Brune and love helping mom and dad in the vineyards and cellar.

"Our goal is to leave something beautiful to Nicola and Lisa one day which they can be proud off"
- Nico and Christelle

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING
WINEMAKING AT LA BRUNE

''It's all about giving sense of place to the wine. Having a winemaking process that respect the message of the land and allow it to show in the wine'' says Nico

A believe in minimum intervention with traditional Burgundian winemaking methods are used to preserve the profile of the terroir. Custom made Burgundian barrels from the forest Pierre du Bourgogne made by Bruno Lorenzon together with Nico, are used for the maturation process. Careful aging in bottle before release, allow the wine to find its inner peace.

The strong connection between Nico and his vines with this unique winemaking philosophy gives birth to wines carrying the unique message from Elgin.
VITICULTURE

Nico is a viticulturist first with more than 15 years' experience in growing vineyard around South – Africa.

Nico has a big French influence with working in Mercurey (Côte Chalonnaise  Burgundy) with Bruno Lorenzon and with well-known French viticulturist Prof Alain Deloire.

This shaped Nico's philosophy:
''there is no generic growing. Each block of vineyard has its own unique approach to allow the vine the best opportunity to show the profile of the land in its fruit. I also believe that the land should accept the vines, they need to become one with the terroir they are planted in''

La Brune has access to some of the highest elevated Chardonnay vineyards in South – Africa and has the honour of producing it's Pinot Noir from one of the highest density vineyards at 10 000 vines per hectare (South – African average 3 300 vines per hectare) using 5 selected clones.
